Oregon Brewers Fest, Salmon Shindig, AIRWAVES

Good things transpiring out of Fruition headquarters this afternoon...

The sun is out and the summer is rolling along at an alarming rate. Mountain Stomp was an amazing success (see video below), and the Oregon Brewer's Festival is coming up quick.

The 2nd Annual Salmon Shindig is July 23rd! We've gotten the ok to have folks come and tent-camp right on the beautiful riverfront property at the Shady Nook, in Salmon Idaho. Seriously, this place is amazing.

This year is shaping up to be big, with Aimee Leigh, Fruition, the BellBoys, and the VILLAINS all gracing the Island stage on saturday evening. Camping will be allowed all weekend (July 23rd-25th) and the price for Saturday's festivities will be cheap.

--------------------

And now for your double moment of Zen:

1st - A quote from the PDX Pop Now! E-mail regarding the cd getting nationwide radio play:

"....Plenty of well known radio favorites seeing more airplay (Laura Veirs, Menomena, Talkdemonic), but lots of newcomers seeing awesome love as well! Y La Bamba, the Great Mundane, AgesandAges, and Fruition seeing some particularly excellent early attention :)

2nd - A Video of Fruition performing "By Monday", saturday night at Mountain Stomp!

See you May 26th (and 27th, and 29th!)

Yo! Mimi here. I'm headed down south to see the folks and friends in Atlanta this week. Should be a grand ole (humid) time! If you have any buddies down there, send them over to the Red Light Cafe on Saturday night (5/22) where I'll be playing with my old friend Parker Smith (from Smitty and the Spare Change).

I'll be back on Wednesday for a great run of Fruition family love! We play Fire on the Mountain that night (5/26), followed by a triple bill at Mt Tabor Theater with 4 on the Floor & Rebel String Band on Thursday (5/27), all building up to a gritty explosion of twang & rock with the Villains & Rose's Pawn Shop at the Goodfoot on Saturday (5/29). Can't wait to see you, enjoy the blooms!

Here's some random eye candy for you:

Flattering Fruition write-up in PSU's Daily Vanguard

Well I did a phone interview the other night for the PSU newspaper.  It was delightfully less frightening than I thought it would be, thanks to writer Leah Bodenhamer's grace and easy-going attitude as an interviewer.

It hit the streets and the internet this morning, just in time to promote tonights show at the Goodfoot with Jackstraw.  With any luck it will get into the hands and computer screens of hella hella hella portland music lovers!  Leah's writing is articulate, colorful and well researched.  Big big ups to her for deciding to cover Fruition!

Here's some of the article...enjoy!

Finding a groovier side

Fruition String Band
The Goodfoot
2845 SE Stark St
Tonight, 9 p.m.
$7, 21+

Perhaps you’ve seen them—charming passers-by with their juxtaposing presentation of grimy appearances and nearly perfected musicianship. Maybe you’ve heard their home-grown harmonies echoing down late night streets that dwell in the rainy afterglow of local celebrations like Last Thursday or Saturday Market. Indeed it is possible that their live performance has stolen your heart in an old west kind of way and tucked it back into yourself, deeper, freer and more inspired.

Is it those two handsome guitarists down by Pioneer Square crooning old Beatles tunes? Is it that old ragtime trio down by the Farmers Market with the washboard and tub bass? No and no. It is that swinging bluegrass quartet, Fruition—oozing with devilishly tasteful soul and redefining the idea of how to play a “show” by standing on street corners with an open guitar case.

This band helps define a movement of music that is as old as the folk songs of the Kentucky Mountains and as honest as a soldier on his deathbed. It’s about community and truth.

It’s sometimes referred to as the “school of life” and is frequently described as a sort of medicinal countercultural revolution—leading back into the roots of music and into the very humanity that created it.
Fruition sweeps away societal labels and walls that come with being a member of such an individualistic culture, and they do it by appealing to and bringing together a limitless audience. People from all walks of life find enjoyment in their performances.

As guitarist Kellen Asebroek puts it, “it’s a show and a party and just a chance to be yourself.” The satisfaction of the audience is a direct result of the chemistry of the performers, who describe themselves as family.

“The first time we played together was live, out in the street, for a moving audience, which was a pretty raw experience,” Asebroek said. “We noticed that when we all sang together, that was when people really stopped and listened.”

In fact, one reason Fruition stands out in the buoyant sea of Portland bluegrass is because of their masterfully unpolished harmonies. Don’t be misguided though—their harmonies are tight, but in a loose, very organic, very human fashion. Solos and vocals are indulged by all four members, which in addition to Asebroek include Mimi Naja, Keith Simon and Jay Cobb Anderson.

As far as influences go, Gillian Welch is the most widely agreed-upon source of influence by all band mates, though inspiration is anything but finite.

“We are inspired,” said Asebroek, “by everything that happens in a day, in a month, in a lifetime. We all vibe to the groovier side of music, like old funk and...." (CONTINUE READING HERE)

Alpaca and D Numbers, 5.25.2010

I love me some Alpaca!

Thought I'd give everyone a heads up about our favorite groovers show next month at the Someday Lounge. First of all, if you've never heard Alpaca, please do so. The best way to hear them is big and loud at a show. The second best (notice its still a "best") is to listen to these live tracks from the Mt. Tabor theatre with Blvd.

Okay now that we're all on the same page.... Their most recent booking with D Numbers is a tasty one. The two bands will go swimmingly together, as D Numbers is the sort of liquid electronica/live band fusion that is impossible to not like. The composition and production are deep and charged with emotion and energy, a quality that Alpaca is also known and loved for.

Needless to say, there will be some next-level sounds and some serious grooving going on at the Someday on April 25th. Be there!

Love K

(p.s. Fruition is playing all week! Wed/Fire on the Mountain, Thurs/Goodfoot, Sat/Mt. Tabor Concert Carnival)

Good news from our dear friend Jeff Acciaioli aka the Great Mundane! Out now on Run Riot records is his second full length LP, Humdrum. I strongly urge people to check this baby out. You can preview or buy it online here, as well as itunes, amazon, addictech and other spots.

Here's a free download of Tremor Dancer, which is track 3 from the new album. sick!

The Adventures of Jean

Well, we (Fruition, The Villains, The Bell Boys) made it back from Mendo/The Bay in one piece... more or less! Our dear friend and band member Jean Claudia Damn Van had some recurring "issues" that made for some very interesting, trying, and yet still comical times.

Exhibit A
At one point all 6 of us were out pushing the unresponsive wench uphill on a big Oakland street, only to make a U-Turn and coast 'er another two blocks the other direction. shenanigans... And let us not forget the blowout:

Exhibit B

But let's be honest here: no good road trip is complete without a laundry list of automotive adversity. Perhaps it's just a rite of passage; a hazing ritual from the tour gods or something. We also did really awesome stuff. Like play music!!!

Exhibit C
Exhibit D
Exhibit E

And venture to strange new places, as one can only hope to do:

Exhib- ok you get the point.

It won't be long until Jean has to depart yet again, for destinations even farther and more unknown. And I'm sure that each excursion will be more ridiculous than the last. Thank goodness we have such a lovely web of family and friends by our side- we're all in this together, and it's purdy good. -Love K

Fruition Returns to CHAOS
(then parties at the Tabor!)

This upcoming Wednesday night, Fruition will be doing an early evening performance (doors open at 7pm) at their stomping grounds, the one and only Chaos Parlour. Except it's not called Chaos anymore. It's been very simply renamed "the Parlour" after some management changes- but rest assured, that living room-type intimacy has not gone anywhere.

The Parlour show will cost $6 at the door, and is a 21+ event.

But WAIT! There's more...

We scheduled such an early show to make PLENTY of time for people to get over to the Mt. Tabor Theatre for Gavin Theory's FREE birthday Get Down! See?

Did I mention that I'll be spinning some hip hop/electronica/dub at that party? Shameless self plug much?

Love - K

Here's a random picture of us all looking somewhat serious - a rare occasion.
